Principles of Exposition: Handling the Bible in Pastoral Ministry

This module will introduce students to everything that is involved in reading the Bible well in order to teach and preach it well to others.

It will be delivered by focusing on four key areas

  • We will examine who we are before God in ministry: what kind of person reads the Bible well, what kind of book is the Bible, and who is the God who gave us the Bible? This means we will study a theology of Bible readers, the doctrine of Scripture, and some aspects of the doctrine of God.

  • We will examine biblical interpretation in general and specific genres in particular. What has happened in the preacher’s study before the compelling sermon is delivered from that particular part of the Bible? (This material will introduce all the various genres of Scripture that will be considered in detail in the various afternoon modules).
  • We will study a theology of expository preaching: what it is and is not, the marks of life-transforming preaching, and its place in the life of God’s people.
  • We will consider aspects of pastoral ministry and what it means to handle the Bible in various ministry settings, not just the pulpit but also other settings such as youth work and small groups.
