Preaching from Narrative (Old & New Testament)

The biggest single genre of literature in the Bible is historical narrative – more than 40% of Scripture is devoted to recounting redemptive history.

With so much of God’s revelation packaged in this form (in both the Old and New Testaments), we need to be clear about what God is communicating through the stories of the Bible. This module aims to give students the tools to teach biblical narrative faithfully, and will include:

  • A Bible overview: providing the big-picture storyline of Scripture.

  • A focus on the Gospels, specifically walking through Mark’s Gospel.
  • Examining the tools needed to exposit Old Testament narrative. For example, identifying the main aim of the text, setting the passage in its wider redemptive context and showing how it points us to Christ.
  • Providing opportunities to ‘practice’ teaching specific passages both from the Gospels and the Old Testament.
