Hebrews and Biblical Theology

We will work through the text of Hebrews, honing in on particular passages that reveal how Christ fulfils Old Testament types, with a special emphasis on tabernacle, High Priest and day of atonement theology. While this is not a ‘preaching lab’, we will also discuss how we might teach and apply all this sophisticated doctrine for a Sunday morning congregation.

  • What was the specific Jewish background that Hebrews was written for?
  • How can we understand Christ’s role in creation, against the backdrop of creation views today? (1:1-4, 11:3)
  • In what sense is Christ ‘better than’ angels, Moses, and Joshua?
  • Who is Melchizedek, and why is he so key in understanding Christ’s better priesthood?
  • How should we interpret the warning passages interspersed in Hebrews, and how do they inform our understanding of final judgement?
  • What about Hebrews 6:1-12? Can we lose our salvation? How can we interpret scripture with scripture when controversial passages arise?
  • Christ’s ‘once for all’ sacrifice and its implications for eucharistic theology
  • How does the old covenant differ from the new, as seen through the lens of Hebrews 12:16-29?
  • What can we learn about sermon structures from Hebrews, itself a sermon with an epistolary conclusion?
