Preaching from New Testament Epistles

Epistles are more difficult to interpret than we first imagine. We are second hand observers of someone else’s correspondence.

  • What is the background against which each epistle is written, with particular focus on Corinthians and Galatians?
  • How did 1st century letters function, and how did Paul and others ‘christianize’ the form?
  • What can we learn from letters to churches versus letters to individuals?
  • How can we interpret passages that depend on understanding a culture foreign to us, eg. ‘meat offered to idols’ (1 Cor 8)
