Eat the scroll – Preaching from the Bible’s Prophetic Literature

This ‘preaching lab’ will familiarise students with ‘prophetic’ ministry as it finds expression in the Bible and, in particular, with those books of the Bible which are identified with the prophets: the aim is to equip students capably and eagerly to handle the Bible’s prophetic literature.

  • We will consider how prophetic ministry is understood in the Scriptures, and see the great variety there is in (a) the individuals described as ‘prophets’, (b) the nature of the ministries they exercised, and (c) the material contained in the books which are associated with them.
  • We will explore the fine balance (and sometimes tension) between the very real humanity of the prophets as it emerges in the literature and the divine authority and inspiration by which they clearly spoke and wrote (2 Pet.1.21).
  • We will look carefully at how the prophetic material was compiled and see why an accurate understanding of the historical context is so important, considering in some detail the distinctive characteristics of prophetic literature and the distinctive way in which language was used by them.
  • The course (which will focus specifically on Jeremiah, Joel and Jonah) will acquaint students with the necessary disciplines whereby the prophetic literature of the Bible can so be taught and preached that it again crackles with the same divine ‘electricity’ with which its original hearers heard the message, as both the judgment and the grace of God are alike proclaimed.
