Malachi – The Last Word in Old Testament Theology

This module walks students carefully through the final book of the Old Testament, setting it in its historical and canonical context and highlighting the ways in which it constitutes a bridge between the Old and New Testaments.

  • The course uses the book of Malachi effectively as a ‘text-book’ to provide a concise compendium of the key themes of OT theology and shows how each of these themes is subsequently affirmed and developed in the New Testament.
  • Students will learn why it’s important as a preacher and pastor both to address sensitive issues and to tackle passages which have occasioned contentious debate; and they will be taught, also, how to work through such issues and passages in a manner that is pastorally wise and helpful.
  • Because Malachi was himself essentially a preacher, the book affords a good example of what might be called ‘prophetic’ preaching; the study of the book of Malachi will therefore help students get to grips with the core elements of, and the requisite disciplines involved in, good expository preaching.
